Will Smith is making moves after this year’s Oscar drama event.
The actor and producer is set to work with Miss Marvel Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in a new sci-fi thriller based on the novel Shine. Deadline reports that four-time Emmy and two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will make her feature-length directorial debut with the project. The script comes from Akiva Goldsman, who reunites with Will Smith after working on I steal, I’m the Legendand Hancock together.
According to the Deadline, the plot of Shine looks like this:
‘If 1% of the world’s children were born with powerful gifts, how would society adapt to them? The Brilliance novel trilogy is set in a future where non-neurotypical people – demonized by society as “kinks” or “abnormal” – are threatening the status quo of the “normal” population with their unique gifts. They are officially labeled “Brilliant” and are carefully screened by the government. The plan is for Smith to play the book series’ hero Nick Cooper, a federal agent working for the Bureau of Analysis and Response. His job is to track down and eliminate abnormal criminals who use their gifts for evil. The agent himself is a freak, with a gift for predictive analytics that allows him to see what is going to happen before it happens and react preemptively. He is also the father of a brilliant daughter.
Infiltrating a radical group of Shining Ones who plan to incite civil war, he uses his own gifts against his Shining enemies, like an assassin who senses time faster than his opponents. When Cooper is ordered to hunt down John Smith – the most elusive and dangerous freak in the country – everything Cooper believes in will be questioned. As one of the freaks he’s been hunting tells him, “You can’t stop the future. All you can do is choose a side.”’
As you may recall, Smith was the centerpiece of “The Slap” at the Oscars, where he pinned host Chris Rock before winning the Oscar for Best Actor for King Richard late at night, and was subsequently banned by the Academy for a decade. It will be seen on the screen in the next Emancipation, playing a hunted fugitive enslaved man who fights for freedom in the dangerous swamps of Louisiana. The film is by Antoine Fuqua, and Apple plans to release it in December.
Can a great Paramount sci-fi movie like Shine help Will Smith relaunch this new era of his career? Will this be the initial vehicle needed to launch director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy further into the mainstream? Only time will tell, but be sure to follow Flickering Myth for more updates on this story.
