- Insider asked nutritionists what they would order from Pizza Hut for a high-protein meal.
- North American adults are advised to eat 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.
- A lighter option is Virtuous Veg Flatbread, which still contains 20 grams of protein.
Protein is one of the three macronutrients that make up all foods and is important for fat loss, muscle maintenance and overall health.
American adults are advised to eat 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, but active people may need more to help with muscle growth and repair.
Consuming enough protein and having a nutritious and balanced diet does not mean never eating fast food. You can find dishes that align with your nutritional goals at popular fast-food chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Subway.
Here’s what three registered dietitians told Insider they would order a high-protein meal at Pizza Hut.
Luke Hanna: Banquet of Half Pepperoni and Hawaiian Pizza with BBQ Chicken Wings
Registered nutritionist Luke Hanna said he would order half the Pepperoni party and half the Hawaiian pizza. If he was feeling more indulgent, he’d add some barbecue chicken wings too, he said.
“If I’m eating pizza, I get what I want, even if it’s higher in calories,” Hanna said. “However, I’ll make sure I’m more reasonable with my nutrition on the days around that.”
Nutritional information for Hanna’s custom order was not available, but as a point of comparison, an individual nine-inch Pepperoni Feast pizza contains 1,092 calories, 43 grams of protein, 106 grams of carbs and 53 grams of fat.
BBQ chicken wings contain 379 calories, 36 grams of protein, 10 grams of carbs and 21 grams of fat.
Hanna said that if he wanted something lighter, he’d go for a small or medium Chicken Supreme pizza and chicken wings.
“Either way I would save on liquid calories and order a calorie-free diet or drink or stick with water,” Hanna said.
Emilia Thompson: Crust Stuffed Vegetable Supreme with BBQ Sauce
Registered nutritionist Emilia Thompson said she would order a Supreme crust pizza stuffed with barbecue sauce.
“Pizza is my favorite food, it brings me genuine comfort, and the association it has with relaxation for me means I wouldn’t deviate from my basic order,” she said.
An individual 11-inch stuffed crust Supreme pizza contains 1,516 calories, 81 grams of protein, 140 grams of carbs and 68 grams of fat.
A barbecue pot has 35 calories, 0 grams of protein, eight grams of carbs and 0 grams of fat.
Thompson said he doesn’t order pizza for its nutritional profile, but for pleasure.
“Within an overall healthy diet, foods like this shouldn’t be demonized,” she said. “Food neutrality is key to a good relationship with her and, as I eat carefully, I would probably eat half and enjoy the rest the next day.”
Lily Soutter: Virtuous Vegetarian Flatbread
Registered nutritionist Lily Soutter said she would order Virtuous Veg Flatbread as a lighter alternative to pizza.
“This option provides a carb base, topped with a variety of colorful vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, red onions and even arugula,” Soutter said. “It’s also topped with mozzarella, which provides high-quality protein to the dish.”
Virtuous Veg Flatbread contains 439 calories, 20 grams of protein, 61 grams of carbs and 12 grams of fat.
