Update on cause of death of teenager whose body was found in a submerged car

The cause of Kiely Rodni’s death may remain a mystery due to the ‘complex’ autopsy after her body was underwater for two weeks.

Kiely Rodni, 16, mysteriously disappeared last month after she was seen drunk at an end-of-school party near the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California.

It wasn’t until a volunteer diving group joined the search days later that she was found inside her vehicle at the bottom of the Prosser Reservoir, and Kiely Rodni’s autopsy report has yet to be released.

Jennifer Shen, Crime Lab Manager at the Chula Vista Police Department, revealed that the autopsy is being delayed because authorities are awaiting toxicology results.

In an exclusive chat with The US Sun, she said: “This particular case is compounded by the complexity of samples required from a body submerged in water for two weeks.

“Decomposition can cause drugs and alcohol to redistribute within the body, a condition that can be exacerbated by submersion in water for a significant period of time.

“Therefore, the types of samples collected are more complex and require a high level of expertise to interpret any findings and then relate them to a possible cause of death. All this takes time.

“It is not surprising that toxicology results are taking months to come out, and a cause of death cannot be determined without them, except for a few significant injuries to the body that leave no doubt (eg, gunshots, stab wounds, beatings, etc.).

“There was no indication what type of injury is present in this case. It may be a cause of death, it will not be something that can be absolutely determined.”

Shen, who has more than three decades of experience in the forensics field, said the police investigation would center on how she ended up in her car at the lake.

“Did she drive alone? Was she led by someone else, who then escaped leaving her behind?” Jen asked.

“Is there evidence of self-defense injuries, harm clearly inflicted by another party, or excessively high levels of drugs/alcohol that would prevent you from entering the lake?

“These are all questions that require answers through the investigative process, answers that cannot come without the results of the toxicology lab.”

Shen added that toxicology labs suffer the same fate as many government entities, as they have long delays and long response times.

“One of the most frustrating things for victims’ families is the time they often have to wait for information about their loved ones,” she continued.

“This includes the general investigation and, in some cases, the cause of death.

“In this case, the cause of death may be related to the ingestion of alcohol and/or drugs, voluntarily or forcibly.”

The Nevada County Sheriff previously said there will be a delay in disclosing the cause of death while they await toxicology results and wrap up their ongoing investigation.

Many suspected that someone else might be involved, but police have yet to confirm that they feel his death involved a crime.

In a statement, a Nevada County spokesperson told The US Sun: “The Sheriff’s Office has records that respond to your request.

“It should be noted, however, [that] the investigation is not complete and is considered ongoing at this time.

“When the investigation is complete, [the] release will be in accordance with all privileges and/or exemptions that may apply.

“We expect the investigation, review and writing processes to be completed by November 1, 2022.”

They explained that if the records are not yet available in November, they will inform the media of a new date when they can be released.

When pressed on the deadline, a spokesperson added: “The toxicology report, which has not yet returned, will be included in the entirety of what we will release when the investigation is complete and the records are ready for release.”
