Ukrainian forces have invaded Russian-occupied areas north of Donetsk in a move that the UK Defense Ministry said on Friday was “pushing pressure on territory that Russia deems essential to its war objectives”.

Fighting in northern Donestk has been described as “continuous” as Ukrainian forces launch a counter-offensive in the town of Lyman, which Russia has occupied since May.

Lyman is about 30 miles west of Izyum in the northeastern region of Kharkiv, where Ukrainian troops have made big gains this month by retaking most of the occupied territory and forcing Russian soldiers to retreat.

Ukraine has announced control of the entire region west of the Oskil River, where territory remains contested from eastern Kharkiv to the Luhansk regions.

“Russia attempted to ‘integrate’ the Oskil into a consolidated defensive line following the withdrawal of its forces earlier in the month,” the UK Defense Ministry said on Friday.

However, for the past three days, Ukrainian forces have “held the bridgeheads on the east bank” of the river, suggesting they might be in a better position to retake the rest of Kharkiv before advancing towards Luhansk.

The ministry’s announcement comes as Russia launches referendums in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, despite intense fighting in the four regions.

BLINKEN SAYS MOSCOW ‘THANKS FOR RUSSIANS’ FOR VOTING FOR FAKE REFERENDUM

Kharkiv was previously listed as one of the regions that Russia intended to annex.

Western officials condemned Moscow’s attempt to illegally seize Ukrainian territory, holding what they called “fake” elections in eastern and southern Ukraine.

“Voting” will begin on Friday and polling stations will open on Tuesday.

According to Russian state media RIA, the question on the ballot is supposed to be: “Do you support the secession of Ukraine, the formation of the region as an independent state and accession to Russia?”

Preliminary results will be released on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the election as a “farce” and Western officials have repeatedly pointed to a similar move Russia took during its 2014 invasion of Crimea.
